Surviving the Challenge.

Surviving the Challenge.

Surviving the Challenge.

The first step in surviving the challenge is facing the challenge. That means it’s critical to take a good look at it and embrace the whole process including the end game.

I had the incredible experience of visiting the cliff dwellings at Mesa Verde in Cortez Colorado. I was amazed at the industriousness of these people. Their fundamental challenge was to simply survive. The amazing thing is that they not only survived, but they also prospered. They were encamped in those cliffs for over 700 years. The structures they built and the artifacts they left behind are a monument to their creativity and hard work. We can learn from them!

The challenges they faced included planting crops for food as well as knowing when, where, and how to plant. They made implements for gathering and storing food. Weapons for hunting and tools for building, had to be thought out and manufactured.

Excuses were not an option and there were no video games or modern conveniences to pass the time or sit on the sidelines while others did the work for them.

What do we learn from understanding this glimpse of history?

I believe it is safe to say that we have become soft and comfortable in a world where we no longer have to fight for survival. Am I being critical of today’s culture? Yes! We can slide by and survive with a fraction of the effort required to genuinely prosper and rise above the average.

So, the question is, “how do we survive the challenge?

How do we rise above the average in today’s culture?” Like the cliff dwellers, we need to face the challenge. We need to examine the challenge and embrace the task with determination, and the resolve that we will not be defeated.

It has become easy to simply “go along to get along.” Today many people have grown up with the idea that we can get a trophy for simply showing up. Well, life doesn’t work that way. I am reminded of a quote by Dr. Steven Covey in his book Seven Habits of Highly Effective People. “Begin with the end in mind.” In other words, what do you really want and how do you get there? We all have the privilege of choice. Lack of action is a choice. That said, the only path to “Surviving the Challenge” is action. Action, commitment, and an industrious spirit are the necessary travel companions for a successful journey to your life goals.
